Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment has organised a capacity enhancement programme for members of the informal sector comprising Tradesmen and Artisans as part of efforts to improve work performances and contribute to the industrial development of the State.
The Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Akinyemi Bankole Ajigbotafe, speaking during the flag-off ceremony of the training held at Government Technical College Agidingbi, Ikeja Lagos, stated that the commencement of the programme is a clear demonstration of the State Government’s commitment to capacity development for practising Tradesman and Artisans for competitiveness in Lagos State.
He said that the Up-Skilling programme is in line with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for an all-inclusive government, as well as to enable Artisans and Tradesmen
benefit from the programme and also maximise their potentials using modern equipment to produce more output at a higher capacity.
Hon. Ajigbotafe stressed that the Ministry initiated the up-skilling training to meet modern-day business realities for global competitiveness. He explained that, since inception, the Ministry has empowered thousands of tradesmen and artisans from the programme.
He reiterated that the present training will hold for eight weeks and will run simultaneously in three Government Technical Colleges at Agidingbi, Ikotun and Ikorodu, noting that the training days for traders are Tuesdays and Wednesdays while Artisans will be Saturdays and Sundays.
“A total number of 1,200 of Artisans will be empowered with working tools at the Up-skilling programme of Tradesmen and Artisans”, he stated.
In her remarks, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board, Ms. Ronke Azeez stated that the Agency will provide the facility for the training programme.
She affirmed that when traders and artisans are economically empowered, there will be less tension in the home front and obvious reduction of social violence in the State.
