Controversy has erupted in Nigeria’s fintech space after popular actor and singer, Adams Kehinde, better known as Lege Miami, took to social media to publicly accused Opay, a leading mobile payment platform, of enabling fraud on its app.
In a shocking video Lege Miami alleged that Opay has failed to track down a notorious fraudster, Abass Olawale Badmus, who has been using his name to defraud innocent Nigerians despite numerous reports, the company has failed to take decisive action against the alleged fraudster nor provide him with any meaningful assistance in resolving the issue.
With tensions running high, Lege Miami has called on the Federal Government to take a hands-off approach, sparking a heated debate about the role of government regulation in the fintech industry .
The actor-singer’s outburst has sparked widespread outrage and raised questions about the security and integrity of Opay’s platform.
The allegations made by Lege Miami have significant implications for Opay and the payment industry as a whole. If the allegations are true, it suggest that Opay’s platform is vulnerable to fraudulent activities, which could undermine trust in the company and the industry.
Aside the introduction of physical address verification for merchants towards enhancing security, more needs to be done to restore trust and confidence in Opay’s platform.
However, all attempt to get Opay management to respond as at press time proves abortive.
